Salomon, jüdischer Gelehrter, * Focşani 7. 12. 1847, ✝ New York 20. 11. 1915; war ab 1890 Dozent für talmudische und rabbinische Literatur in Cambridge, ab 1899 Professor für Hebräisch in London. Ab 1902 leitete Schechter das »Jewish Theological Seminary of America« in New York, das unter seiner Präsidentschaft ein bedeutendes Zentrum des konservativen Judentums in den USA wurde. Weltweit bekannt wurde Schechter durch die Entdeckung der Genisa von Fustat (Kairo), aus der er über 100 000 Handschriften nach Cambridge brachte.
